(Book review from a Christian perspective.)

As a brown-skinned girl who’s heard countless Neela aunties telling me to stay out of the sun to avoid darkening my skin, Maya Loves the Sun by Disha Mathur really struck a chord with me. The book beautifully challenges the deeply ingrained cultural beliefs that associate darker skin with something to be avoided. It’s a refreshing read that not only tackles colorism but also celebrates the beauty of brown skin and the joy of stepping into the sun with confidence.

From a Christian perspective, the story resonates with the belief that every person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). Skin color, like every other aspect of our appearance, is part of God’s diverse and beautiful creation. The idea that one skin tone is superior to another contradicts the biblical truth that all people are worthy of love and respect. Maya Loves the Sun is a wonderful reminder of this message, encouraging readers to embrace their natural beauty just as God intended.

The story follows Maya, a young girl who’s discouraged from playing in the sun because of the fear that it will darken her skin. This causes her to lose her spark and self-confidence. But through the gentle wisdom of her mother, Maya learns that true beauty comes from within, and that we are beautiful in every season of life. The book also reflects the biblical principle that God shows no partiality (Acts 10:34-35, Romans 2:11). In a world where colorism often favors lighter skin, the sun itself serves as a powerful metaphor for inclusion—it doesn’t discriminate, so why should we?

What I love most about this book is how it celebrates brown skin, especially in the sunlight. Maya rediscovers the joy of sunlight on her skin, and this moment of reclaiming her confidence is truly empowering. She even helps her younger sister, Rani, see the beauty in their skin under the sun. It’s a touching moment of sisterhood and self-acceptance.

In addition to the emotional and cultural messages, the author does a wonderful job of introducing terms like "colorism" and "sun safety," making the book both informative and accessible. It’s a fantastic read for young readers, and it offers an important conversation starter about self-love, skin health, and the harmful effects of colorism.

Ultimately, Maya Loves the Sun is an uplifting and inspiring story that encourages readers—particularly brown-skinned girls—to embrace their natural beauty and step confidently into the light. It’s a perfect blend of education, empowerment, and celebration of God’s creation.
